Pilgrimage to Georgia

Georgia

One of the earliest official Christian countries, according to the Orthodox tradition, the apostles Simon and Andrew were the first to preach Christianity in Georgia in the 1st century. St Nino of Cappadocia was instrumental in the converting the locals and bringing about Christianity as the state religion in 337. The country has many churches, cathedrals and monasteries in beautiful, often remote, locations featuring frescoes and stone carvings. We will visit the ancient Cave Towns built into the mountains and enjoy the impressive scenery of the great Causcasus Mountains. As well as viewing the important Christian sites of Georgia, there will be plenty of time to try the local delicacies and cuisine, meet the locals and learn more about their culture.

Inigo Lopez de Onaz y Loyola was born in the Castle of Loyola in the Basque country in North East Spain in 1491. He was one of 13 children born to a noble family and as a young man had ideas of chivalry, love and knighthood. In 1521 he was severely wounded by a cannonball during the Battle of Pamplona. During his recuperation in Loyola he had a vision of Our Lady with the Christ Child and experienced true compassion and a spiritual conversion. He began a journey to Jerusalem so that he could "kiss the earth where our Lord had walked". He founded the Jesuit Order and developed The Spiritual Exercises.
