CERTOSA DI MAGGIANO, SIENA, ITALY
MAP Introduction
Immediately outside the city walls of Siena, is the beautifully restored Certosa di Maggiano. Excellent facilities, mouth-watering meals and professional service all contribute to the Certosa’s reputation as the very best place to stay in Siena.

Originally built in 1314 as a place for meditation and prayer, the Certosa was completely restored by its present owner and in 1975, was transformed into the most wonderful hotel. With its cloisters, “Emperor’s Hall”, elegant library with antique alder-wood bookcase and just 17 rooms all differing in style, colour scheme and furnishings, the Certosa is a delightfully homely and peaceful destination.

It is located in tranquil countryside and yet convenient to the major roads leading into Siena, a mere 2 km from the famous Piazza del Campo. In the XVI century the Certosa di Maggiano was partially destroyed in the terrible war between Spain, headed by the Emperor Charles V, and France under Enrico II, but its charm remained intact. Life at the Certosa continued peacefully from that time to 1792 when the Tuscan. Grand Duke Leopold II decided to dispossess the monks of their cells and sell them to private individuals.

The property passed from hand to hand until 1969, the year in which Signora Anna Grossi Recordati fell in love with the majestic, ruined complex and decided to restore it to its former glory. In 1975 the Certosa di Maggiano was transformed into a hotel.

The Certosa offers its guests a variety of thoughtfully appointed spaces in which to spend different moments of the day.

  • The 17 bedrooms, corresponding to what were seventeen monastic cells, are situated over three floors, and are luxuriously appointed.
The "Emperor's Hall" is so-named for the twelve eighteenth-century paintings, portraying the twelve Roman Emperors, which line its walls.
  • The Library, dominated by an antique alder-wood bookcase, also features sofas upholstered with fine silk created by the Antico Setificio Fiorentino.
  • The grounds are vast and among the olive groves and vineyards one finds the tennis court, helicopter landing, and a heated, open-air pool.
  • Near the pool there is also a small fitness room.

Many services are available upon request and appointment, such as:

  • Massages
  • Manicures and other beauty treatments
  • Automobile rental with or without chauffeur
  • Guided visits of Siena and surroundings
  • Visits to wine cellars and wine tasting
