Originally a 16th Century watchtower the Masseria is transformed into a small luxury hotel charmingly decorated with an eclectic mix of local Apulian style and antiques. The feeling of space and simplicity is overwhelming. The small chapel in the grounds was built in thanks by the farm owner who allegedly survived a shooting accident back in the 1750s. The white-washed courtyard evokes memories of the working olive farm of last century. Old olive presses are cleverly incorporated into the courtyard and the huge function room – which can be used for parties or board meetings – used to house two impressively large olive presses. During the summer months, pizzas are made in the 500 year old pizza oven in the courtyard for hotel guests.
The central parts of the hotel include a billiard room in one of the ancient caves, a library, TV room and several sitting rooms each with old fireplaces for the winter months. The swimming pool is beautifully and innovatively constructed like a natural pond. There is a bar within the pool area where lunch is often served during the summer.
The Masseria’s organic farm produces a wonderful array of fruit and vegetables including almonds, figs, prickly pears and grapes. You can stroll around the old walled garden, the ancient olive trees and the herb garden and infuse the peace and tranquillity of the area. The Aveda spa is discreetly located in a cave with a wonderful indoor plunge pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, fitness room and a wide range of treatments.
