Just 11 kms north-east of Siena set in the classic Tuscan landscape of olive groves, vineyards and forests, Cerreto castle was of strategic importance in the medieval feuds of the warring factions of the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, protecting Siena from the Florentines and other rivals.  The castle is now just a ruin but its watch tower remains standing high on the hill with breathtaking 360 degree views.  This stone property was added to in the XVth century and now has been lovingly restored into a real home with true elegance and style.  The well-kept garden gives an unprecedented feeling of space and being on top of the world and the incredible horizon pool has the most exceptional views over the hills and beyond.

The large farmhouse style kitchen is extremely well-equipped with a typical range cooker and proper kitchen table.  French windows open onto a large terrace well set up for long lazy lunches shaded from the Tuscan sun or delightful dinners under the stars.  There are two sitting rooms both with fireplaces as well as a formal dining room all furnished with antique mirrors, fine paintings, comfortable sofas and armchairs and many books which would suggest this house as an ideally cosy and warm venue for an out of season break as well as for those fantastic summer vacations. 

The five bedrooms are all extremely well appointed with fine furniture, classic rugs and traditional bedspreads.  The bathrooms however have a modern feel with large oversize shower heads and designer stainless steel taps.  All of the rooms have exposed wooden beams typical of the region and style of house.  The house exudes a deeply homely feel and has a real charm about it.  It would be the ideal holiday venue for a group of friends or a family.

There is plenty to explore in the area with Siena just 20 minutes to the south-west and Gaiole and Radda in Chianti just 20 minutes to the north.  The village of Pianella is only 4.5km away so handy for shopping and the area is full of Tuscan delights at every turn – castle ruins, olive groves and vineyards amidst echoes of a turbulent history of factional fighting between city states for control of the rich territory.  On a more ephemeral note, the light is defining glory of Tuscany with the colours becoming so deep and vibrant as the shadows lengthen and the day cools.  This is the ideal property for evening bellinis and morning cappucini as it, uniquely, faces both the setting and the rising sun.
