Il Pero, situated in the lower part of Val d'Orcia, is the historical name of this private estate of 350 hectares dating back to 1100AD. Originally a hospice for pilgrims, the estate is bordered by two rivers, the Orcia and the Landola.
The main house, Santa Caterina, and the character towered cottage, Le Torri, are part of the estate, which also produces red and white wine, olive oil and organically grown vegetables and fruit. Both cottages have recently been renovated and furnished to a high standard and present simple and rustic structures, with modern conveniences. Le Torri, however, has more 'flavour' with each of the two bedrooms being reached by elliptical staircases in each tower.
The views are stunning and with hardly any buildings in sight, you are assured of beautiful scenery to enjoy every day. The sense of peace is total. Hence, no ambient light to spoil the night sky, just nature and many, many stars!
Between the properties, which are approximately 120 metres apart, is the shared swimming pool, with a changing area, portable BBQ, shower and a shaded area to rest and recharge your batteries in this most peaceful and tranquil setting. Sun chairs and sun beds are provided, as well as towels to add to your comfort. Outside each house there is a loggia, for dining al fresco and enjoying those long, summer evenings.
Walk or ride around the estate on the mountain bikes provided, and immerse yourself in this lovely natural habitat, with varied bird watching, as well as fallow deer, wild boar, rabbits and foxes.
Or why not try a drawing course nearby, or partake in local wine tasting and tasting of pecorino cheese.
