HIGHLIGHTS
- Beachside location
- Tropical paradise
- 18th century restored plantation house
- 1950's glamour, antique furnishings
- Perfect 'get away from it all' holiday
- Ideal for family gatherings
This famous house, with its own beach, has been in the same English family ownership for more than 50 years. Built in the 18th century, it has all the spacious comfort of the Colonial Georgian era - cool, airy rooms, lovely original Jamaican furniture, antique portraits and photographs, select china and old books. It is reminiscent of a bygone era, when the island played host to many glamorous parties in the 1950's, often attended by Coward, Fleming, Flynn and their set.
Unity is a charming, old-fashioned family home, not a state-of-the-art hotel, and is rather like a traditional Scottish shooting lodge or an English country house transplanted into a lush, tropical seaside setting. It is a place in which to relax and forget the outside world, where you can switch off and immerse yourself in its old-fashioned ambiance. Unity has welcomed many famous guests over the years, from Princess Anne to the Monty Python team, who it is believed completed The Life of Brian there.
The house sleeps 12 comfortably in six bedrooms, with all either double or twin, and four bathrooms, two of them en-suite. All the bedrooms have high ceilings, generous ventilation and, without exception, stunning sea views. The principal rooms, including bedrooms, all have ceiling fans. At Unity, you won’t find any air conditioning or the modern conveniences associated with modern hotels! However, the history and homely character rather than opulent décor, with its period furnishings, more than makes up for it.
There is a large, shady garden, full of tropical colour, that leads directly onto Unity’s own sparkling white sandy beach, just right for sand castles. The spacious lawn in front of the house makes a perfect spot for sunbathing. Part of the beach is shaded by a large sea-almond tree, so it can be used by small children all day long. The water is shallow inshore, shelving gently out towards the coral reef. A row of floats, roped together, keeps visiting boats away and provides a defined safe swimming area for children.
The five staff, most of whom have been with the family for many years, are well trained and charming. Meals can be served either in the elegant formal dining room, or outside, where there is a portable barbecue and plenty of shade. The housekeeper and cook, Dorothy, specialises in delicious, healthy Jamaican dishes with evocative names, such as jerk chicken, mackerel run-down, curry goat, stamp-and-go fritters and rice and peas. Foster, our much loved butler, keeps the bar stocked with ice cold Red Stripe, soft drinks, tropical fruit juices, fresh limes and the ingredients of our trademark ‘Unity Special’ - Appleton Estate rum, ginger ale, half a lime and a dash of bitters.
There is plenty to do at Unity. By day you can swim, play tennis, snorkel on the reef, sunbathe, read, or potter in the shady garden or among the rock pools on the point. Jamaica’s finest golf course is only a short walk away. Scuba diving, glass bottomed boat trip and water skiing are available nearby, or you could try guided river-rafting.
