Renovated and decorated by a well-known interior designer, mostly using the famous antiques market at nearby Isle sur la Sorgue, Mas de la Rose is a delightful, relaxed family home between the Luberon and Avignon. The 18th century restored farmhouse is set amidst fields and orchards and has lovely countryside views of the rolling hills of Provence.
The house is a treasure trove of antiques and collectables, evidence of the owner's passion for beautiful objects. Despite the tastefulness of every room, this house makes both a very relaxed and relaxing house to stay in. As much as possible the downstairs rooms open onto the garden through large french windows, which also serve to flood the house with light.
On the ground floor there is a large and sunny sitting room. The south facing Music room has a piano and a library and study area, providing a quiet space to work or relax in. The vast, light-filled provencal kitchen is the centre of the house and all life revolves around it, with ample space for preparing and eating lively family meals and combining age-old charm with modern conveniences.
There is an additional room – the Jardin d’Hivers. It doubles as an extra bedroom when there are extra guests and the owner stores her lemon trees there in winter!
Upstairs there are five bedrooms and, as the beds are antique, the sizes are not standard! The pretty Master bedroom has an enormous bed - almost seven feet wide - and has an ensuite bathroom. The other double bedroom has a standard sized bed and, together with the other twin and single bedrooms, shares the use of a bathroom and shower room on this floor.
The Mas sits in 2.5 acres of land, planted with lavender, cypress, olive and fruit trees. Directly in front of the house is a petit jardin de cure – a small formally planted area with box hedges and pretty roses, followed by a large lawned garden with a stone fountain in the middle. Set close to the house is a good sized swimming pool that benefits at times from the shade cast by a 200 year old plane tree.
Le Thor is a medieval village on the banks of the Sorgue river, with some of its 14th century walls and gates still standing together with its castle and an elegant campanile (bell-tower). Le Thor is a good-size village with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants, banks and a supermarket. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday.
Isle sur la Sorgue, the antiques capital of France, is 5km away. Aix en Provence, St Remy, Nimes, Arles, Les Baux, Marseille, the Camargue and Cassis are all an easy drive away.
During the summer there is a multitude of arts and cultural events all around from the arts festival at Avignon to the opera festivals at Aix and in the amazing Roman amphitheatre at Orange; the world-class piano festival at Roque d'Antheron; the Musicales du Luberon; and the Lacoste festival courtesy of Pierre Cardin. These are the best known amongst a host of world class entertainment.
