Perched on top of the Montagnola in Siena sits the beautiful estate of the Castello di Celsa. The castle is privately owned by the Aldobrandini family and closed to the public, yet guests have now been given the opportunity to stay in the castle’s grounds in the historical residence of La Limonaia, so called as it used to house the family’s lemon trees during the winter.

As you approach the estate, the entrance to Castello di Celsa is awe-inspiring – guests are immediately transported back in time as they pass through the gates of this impressive, ancestral castle. Surrounding the Castello, there are several areas of formal gardens from which you can look back at the ivy-covered towers and the Castello’s architecture, or outwards over the breathtaking countryside.

Once inside, you will be greeted by the housekeeper, who has been taking care of estate guests for years, with freshly prepared typically Tuscan refreshments for your party. the drawing and dining rooms are airy and spacious with original beams and high ceilings. The décor is of soft and muted colours, blending harmoniously with the lovely surroundings. The delightful arched French windows flood all the rooms on this floor with light and all open onto the pretty landscaped garden with the private swimming pool, from which you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside that surrounds this estate, and the Siena skyline beyond. Although Castello di Celsa is only 20 minutes from Siena, the setting is secluded and tranquil making this property an ideal option for families who want space to relax. The charming pergola is perfect for dining al fresco, or just enjoying the varied aromas of old fashioned Musk roses, rosemary bushes, cyandrus, yellow broom and blue tinged sage that fill the air with their fragrances.

The first floor has two impressive Master bedrooms, both with adjoining dressing rooms and en-suite bathrooms, plus two twin-bedded rooms that each have the use of a private bathroom. There is also a sofa bed in the upstairs TV room that is ideal to accommodate an extra guest if required with an additional WC and washbasin. Beyond the kitchen is another single bedroom and shower room that would be suitable for a Nanny.

There are many walks in the grounds of the estate and nearby hills for guests to enjoy, together with the chance to learn Tuscan cooking skills from the renowned local restaurateur Giancarlo Giannelli. There is also a chance to enjoy a unique encounter with Siena, in the company of your own private guide – Vittoria Adami Nepi, a friend of the Aldobrandini family – who will take you on a delightful tour of the town. Arezzo, Florence and the many pretty villages of Chianti (not to mention the wineries!) are all nearby as are many excellent restaurants where one can sample some of the typical dishes and wines of the region.
