The rich history of Riad Herougui is linked to numerous royal families and became Moulay Aarafa’s marrakechi headquarters in 1953. More recently its present owners have undertaken the meticulous restoration project, maintaining the wonderful arabo-andalucian style of the house. As with most Riads, life is organised on two levels around a central courtyard. There is the continual soothing sound of water from a stone fountain and the pool, surrounded by palm trees, is a divine setting for swimming year-round.

Guests can enjoy relaxing on one of the three balconies surrounded by palm, orange, olive, poinsettia and sage trees. From the upper balcony superb panoramic views can be enjoyed of the Medina, Atlas Mountains and the ‘jebilets’. Alternatively, one can relax on a sofa on the eastern balcony and listen to the sounds of birdsong and the call of the Muezzin, where dinner is served in the warm evenings, clay lamps subtly positioned amongst the vegetation, whilst the Moorish lounge with traditional saffron-coloured lime walls, fireplace and stunning ‘tataoui’ ceiling is perfect in the winter.

Bedroom suites capture the magic of Morocco with authentic colours, Moroccan tiles and arabo-indian style woodwork. Every decoration has been thought through to the minutest detail by the owner who is a well-renowned Parisian interior-decorator. Her passion for the orient blends beautifully with elements collected from other areas of Morocco, Tunisia and the Lebanon.

Meals can be served in a variety of places to suit your choosing and the excellent service is both subtle and professional. Private parties can be arranged here and the service extends to offer guided tours of the city and souk, massage and transfers from the airport.
