HIGHLIGHTS
- Private estate
- Set in Sierra de Hornachuelos nature reserve
- Private pool
- Historical hunting lodge
- Extensive grounds
- Original, period furnishings
As one climbs into the hills of the Sierra de Hornachuelos nature reserve outside Palma del Rio, there is a rough driveway that twists and turns up the hillside and into the distance. This is the private entrance to the estate of San Bernardo. After a while the track gives way to an eucalyptus lined avenue leading to gates that open into the orange and lime groves and eventually one arrives in the main courtyard, planted in the French style and dominated in its centre by an Italian white marble fountain.
Inside, the hunting lodge is decorated and furnished in period style, trophies and memorabilia from hunting parties of long ago are everywhere and family photographs and memories abound - the Hacienda’s rich history makes one feel a very privileged guest. The grand, double staircase and decorative brick and tile work create an impressive entrance hall off which the dining room, sitting room and chapel lead. Up the stairs is the main landing, running the length of the main wing, off which the rooms lead through arched doorways of impressively massive oak.
Slightly faded in elegance now but extremely comfortable, the property is overflowing with character - noisy plumbing, quaint wiring - but all fully functional. The bedrooms are comfortable and charming and the reception rooms the perfect setting for friends or family to enjoy their houseparty.
Outside the grounds are extensive and varied from collonaded pool area to courtyard and from orchard to forest - a magical area for children to wander and play or for guests to enjoy the fresh air and beautifully kept orange groves. The Hacienda itself has two other wings, currently closed, and several outbuildings and yards that constitute the San Bernardo estate buildings all lovingly kept up by an army of local, friendly staff.
Nearby are many towns and sites of cultural and historic interest and within the grounds, one can organise picnics and walks around the Hornachuelos, walking, riding, archery and hunting - that especially brings back the memories of yesteryear to the Hacienda de San Bernardo.
