La Diouana, Oualidia, Morocco (Sleeps 8)

Villa La Diouana, situated near a seventeenth century kasbah and a ruined royal summer palace, is a luxurious forties villa which has been thoughtfully and stylishly refurbished using a combination of modern and traditional Moroccan techniques. Throughout the villa there is tadlakt flooring and moucharrabieh woodwork. This combines perfectly with the more contemporary use of panoramic windows to create  a sense of calm and space. The view of the lagoon and the Atlantic ocean is to die for - unspoilt, mesmerizing and forever changing.

All three bedrooms enjoy en suite facilities. The beautiful salon has a wood-burning stove for cooler evenings and there is a fabulous roof terrace on which to snooze in the sun by   day and from which to gaze at the stars by night. The cottage, just next door, contains the fourth bedroom and sleeps two adults. This allows for separate living accommodation and privacy with its own kitchen/sitting room and patio area.

The large walled garden surrounding  the house has been planted with palm trees, oleander, bougainvillea, hibiscus and eucalyptus. The villa is just a short walk away from the beach and the small village of Oualidia, famous for its oyster beds. The lagoon and estuary are a haven for nature lovers with prolific birdlife including pink flamingoes, stilts, oystercatchers, egrets, herons and other shore birds. There are lots of wonderful walks to deserted coves, wild, windswept beaches  and rocky cliffs whilst the beaches on the lagoon are safe and pleasant for swimming, surfing, boat trips and windsurfing.

Villa La Diouana is a delightful place to stay all year round. For those guests wishing to explore a little further afield, Marrakech and Essaouira are only two and a half hours’ drive away whilst Safi and its famous pottery centre is just  40 miles to the south.  However, most guests find themselves so enchanted by Villa La Diouana and its sense of relaxation they find it hard to leave – with oysters available in restaurants overlooking a shimmering lagoon there’s no need to!
