In late September we led a trip with David Payne and Sister Elizabeth Rees to the island of Patmos in Greece. We were blessed with uplifting spiritual input from David together with enlightening explanations of the book of Revelation from Sister Elizabeth.
Set back from the charming small port, the hotel’s courtyard and pool with its circular poolside bar is delightfully surrounded by pink bougainvilea.
We spent a lovely morning in the beautiful gardens of a quiet monastery overlooking the harbour and listened to David’s charismatic and joyful teaching on Christianity.
We visited the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St John received his visions that he recorded in the Book of Revelation, led by our local guide Sofia.
There was plenty of time to return to this inspirational place to pray and reflect individually during the week. Many of us found this a transformational experience.
We visited the Monastery of St John the Theologian which crowns the hill in the medieval town of Hora. Sofia gave us a tour of the 15th Century frescoes and the museum of the Monastery.
We had a delicious lunch at Jimmy’s Balcony restaurant and had time to wander the charming narrow streets of Chora with its wonderful houses and boutique shops.
Each day we had lovely lunches in family-run tavernas and in the evenings we were free to explore on our own. The island is small and friendly so we felt confident to explore on our own, by moped, on foot, by local bus or taxi. There are many charming beaches, little villages and a traditional way of life to discover. We visited a local project called the Holy Gardens of Patmos which is creating beautiful and sustainable gardens full of material and spiritual inspiration.
