Christmas has flown by and we still have several months before the clocks change. If you feel like you need to escape the Winter gloom for a few days (or even weeks), have a look at our recommendations for Winter getaways:
The temperature here is in the late teens, early twenties sunny all day, nearly everyday and flights can take as little as 3 hours to get there. You can surf the Saharan dunes, climb the Atlas mountains or get lost among the souk of Marrakesh. Marrakesh has an abundance of sophisticated, international restaurants and bars ideal to be unearthed on a long weekend getaway. Hear the ubiquitous call to prayer whilst relaxing at a hammam or disappear into the hills and enjoy spa treatments in privacy at your villa. We have some beautiful Morrocan villas here.
No sun chasing here but with the best snow in 30 years falling there is no better time to book a trip to the Alps. If you like your evening activity to match that of your skiing then head to the 3 vallees, famous for it’s apres ski it takes partying on the slopes to another level. Verbier gets late snow showers so you should be able to skiing over Easter (in April) this year. The Dolomites have a much more relaxed take on skiing, just right for families with small children and those first time nervous skiers. In Zermatt they are being snowed under so if you are lucky enough you may even get stuck on holiday – the dream! We have several chalets that you can see here.
Mexico is becoming easier, cheaper and faster to get to from the UK; get an evening flight, have a good 8 hour sleep and wake up raring for your holiday. On the Yucatán Peninsula you can discover the underground water system of cenotes which you can snorkel, dive and even hike through. Perhaps you would prefer to relax on the beaches of Tulum, explore the Mayan ruins at Coba or snorkel with Turtles at Akumal. Mexico is diverse in it’s offerings and is topped off with an incredible array of food. You will feel worlds away from our dark winter nights. One of our favourite hotels to stay in is here.
Oman provides a brilliant insight for those wishing to see a modern Arab world; there is pride in their ancient history yet sincere forethought in planning for the future – there are no high rise buildings. You can walk up through wadis in the centre of the desert at Wahiba Sands, view whales and dolphins from a dhow in the waters off the coast or watch the sunset on the Al Hajar Mountains. If you just want to sit on a beach and relax Oman has many excellent, empty beaches perfect for those who just want to switch off.
The best time to visit Thailand is late November till the end of April, ideal for escaping our winter. Thailand has some of the most beautiful, accessible islands in the world that you can be on within 12 hours of leaving the UK. Alternatively you can head to the mountains around Chiang Mai and spend several days hiking through the forest viewing hidden waterfalls and enjoying the beauty of nature. Before you leave enjoy the bustle of Bangkok; revel in the wonders of the Buddhist temples, experience the breathtaking street food and enjoy sun-downers from the roof of a 5 star hotel.
